Olive
trees are one of our favorite trees on the island and they are wonderful to
photograph. They are both mystical and wise and change in character the longer
you gaze upon their gnarly trunks. Eerie shapes and faces that are both human
and creature like seem to appear on them with every subtle change of light and
shadow. They are magnificent in their ageless beauty.
According to
historical data, the Phoenicians and Greeks introduced olive trees to the
Iberian Peninsula and from there they reached Mallorca. Historical references from
the 13th century show that Olive oil was exported from Mallorca to Northern
Africa and mainland Spain together with other agricultural products. Mallorcan Olive
oil was a regular, continuous export from the ports of Mallorca.
